2010 Freshmen Working Out

The 2010 Howell Freshman Football Team has begun weight training and conditioning for the upcoming season.  The team has been working hard at the high school field house on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM til 7:30 PM since March 1st.

Howell Freshman finish @ 7-2!

 Howell Finish Season

Howell 12, Grand Ledge 16 - Dateline:  October 22nd, 2009   The Freshman Highlander's travelled to Grand Ledge High School for the final game of the 2009 season.  The weather was windy, rainy, and cold, but Howell took the opening kickoff and efficiently marched 60 yards for the first score behind the hard runnning of Tyler Lassiter, D.J. Arnold, and Vince Patritto.  Vince took a toss from QB Pat Ryan and swept around left end for a twenty yard drive capping TD.  The extra point try was missed.  Each team scored two touchdowns over the course of four quarters, with Patritto adding his second TD late in the fourth quarter, but the four point difference in the final score came from The Comets' two, two point conversions.

Coach Sams says, "The future for these up and coming sophomores looks very bright.  Good luck, stay together, and we'll see you in the weightroom!"

The Highlander's finish the season with a respectable 7 win and two loss record.

Howell Freshman dominate KLAA Crossover with Lakeland

Howell 33 Lakleand 6  Howell MI - Thursday, October 15th, 2009     Howell's Freshman football team notched it's 7th win of the 2009 season with a victory over the visiting Waterford Lakeland Eagles behind a stingy defense and nicely executed special teams.  Lynnen Bostic kicked three P.A.T.'s for his 2nd consecutive game while D.J. Arnold's punts kept the Eagles pinned deep in their territory much of the game.

4 Highlander running backs earned touchdowns on the day as the offense effectively spread the scoring around.  Kyle DeCamp carried for 49 yards and a TD while D.J. pounded out 41 yards with two scores.  Vince Patritto had total yards honors with 99 in the 1st half!  Vince picked up another 17 in the second giving him, and his O-Line, a well done 117 yards on the ground!  Vince also had 41 yards in receiving on tosses from QB Pat Ryan.  Evan Haras also scored on a nifty 20 yard scamper, but the TD was called back because of a penalty.  It didn't keep him scoring again, however, as Evan picked up 32 more yards and a TD late in the game.

Opening the 2nd half, #4, Sterling Bennett had a fine interception coupled with a 31 yard return that put the offense in great field position.  D.J. opened the 2nd half with one of his TD's one play later.

The win moved the Freshman Highlanders to a respectable 7-1 season record with the finale at Grand Ledge next Thursday, October 22nd.

Howell bounces back with big win!

Howell 35 - Brighton 0   Howell, MI - Thursday, October 8, 2009  - On a damp and blustery afternoon, The Howell Freshman Highlanders hosted The Brighton Bulldogs football team with Howell registering it's 6th victory in 7 tries;  final score Brighton 0, Howell, 35.  1st Quarter scoring saw D.J. Arnold pound out a six yard TD run and a two point PAT was added via air mail from Pat Ryan to Scott Wetzel.

Howell's defense was relentless with Cam Englund constantly in the Bulldog backfield or Zeb Garza hammering the Brighton running backs at every chance.  DE Pete Cender knocked down several 'Dog pass atttempts and had a handful of solo tackles.  Brighton managed only three 1st downs the entire afternoon.

With 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, #25, Vince Patritto, scampered off tackle for a 30 yard TD.  Lynnen Bostic added the 1st of his 3 extra points on the day.  Later, the crowd saw the Howell offense reach into it's bag of tricks with a 40 yard "throwback" TD that started with QB Ryan throwing to Cody Wiggins.  Cody threw it back to Pat and he found big TE Pete Cender streaking past the defender for a 40 yard TD!  Bostic added his 2nd PAT.

Early in the 4th quarter, Howell started a drive from their own 14 yard line.  Taking turns moving the ball on the ground, 3 of the Highlanders' big running backs took turns grinding out a punishing 86 yard drive.  Arnold, Patritto, and Kyle DeCamp accounted for most of the yardage with DeCamp finishing the job from 6 yards out.  Bostic:  PAT #3!  A final score came on a roll-out pass from QB Hayden Hughes to Dan Hurley.

In a clash between two undefeated, 5-0, football teams...,

Hartland 35 - Howell 6
Howell, MI - Howell Freshman Highlanders suffered their first defeat to the Hartland Eagles.  An early miscue lead to an Eagle TD and a 7-0, 1st quarter lead for Hartland.  Hartland's second score came on a pass play to end the 1st half.  With time running out, the long throw was batted twice by a Howell defender, but settled into the hands of the Hartland receiver and resulted in a 14-0 score at the intermission.  Hartland opened the second half with an option pitch play that went 55 yards for a TD and a 21-0 lead.  QB Johnny Cheshire and WR Cody Wiggins connected on a beautiful fade pass to put Howell in position to tally it's only points.  Final score: Hartland 35, Howell 6.

The Freshman Highlanders will host their long-time rival, The Brighton Bulldogs, next Thursday, October 8th, 2009.  The kick-off for the Brighton contest has been moved up to 4:00 PM to accomodate a "5th Quarter" B game.

Howell Freshman  Football Team opens Homecoming weekend with a win!

Howell 19- Pinckney 8
Pinckney, MI - In a match-up of two, 4-0 Freshman football teams, a tough Howell Defense, working together, held previously undefeated Pinckney's powerful ground game to one touchdown.  Pat Ryan threw one TD to Austin Downer and both D.J. Arnold and Vince Patritto registered long gains on the ground for Howell.  D.J. also took a pass from Ryan and rumbled 55 yards to the Pirate 8 yard line.  A timely 3rd quarter interception by Stirling Bennett helped turn the tide for the Highlanders.  Tight end Pete Cender caught three passes from Ryan.  Two of Cender's receptions went for first downs that kept the chains moving.  Final score:  Howell, 19   Pinckney, 8

Howell Freshman  Football Team earns a win at Grand Blanc in a heartstopper

Howell 33- Grand Blanc 32
Grand Blanc, MI - Howell Freshmen remain unbeaten at 4-0.  Quarterback Pat Ryan hits Cody Wiggins with a 52 yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds remaining in the game to take the lead and the win.  Howell led most of the game as D.J. Arnold ran 55 yards for a TD on Howell's 1st possession.  Then, Pete Cender blocked a punt and Pat Hoxie recovered it in Grand Blanc's endzone for the TD.  Not to be outdone, Pete Cender picked up a punt that was blocked by Pat Hoxie and returns it for a TD.
